The dial is the primary feature of the watch, as is the case with many of De Bethune's DB models. The DB28xs' dial is composed of polished and blued grade 5 titanium, surfaced with a "random guilloché" pattern (De Bethune claims this is the first in the world), and finished with a series of white-gold stars that seem to float on the wavy surface of the dial. Thus, Starry Seas.
The DB28XS was designed primarily to satisfy collectors' demands for a scaled-down version of the watch. The mission has been completed. De Bethune produced a thinner watch by reducing the caliber DB2005 to fit a smaller diameter by eliminating the moonphase and power reserve indicator of the normal DB28. The XS reduces the thickness of the core DB28 "Kind of Blue" to 9mm from 11.4mm.
